Uniform Crime Definitions

 


Assault - An unlawful attack by one person upon another. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Aggravated Assault - An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This type of assault usually is accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Other Assaults - Simple, Not Aggravated - This category includes all assaults which do not involve the use of a firearm, knife, cutting instrument, or other dangerous weapon and in which the victim did not sustain serious or aggravated injuries. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Arson - To unlawfully and intentionally damage, or attempt to damage, any real or personal property by fire or incendiary device. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Burglary - Burglary is defined as the unlawful entry into a building or other structure with the intent to commit a felony or a theft. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Forcible Rape -The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Carnal knowledge is defined as "the act of a man having sexual bodily connections with a woman; sexual intercourse." Blacks Law Dictionary, 6th ed. There is carnal knowledge if there is the slightest penetration of the sexual organ of the female by the sexual organ of the male. Homicide - Murder and non-negligent manslaughter are defined as the willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition). Not included in this definition are deaths caused by negligence, suicides, or accidental deaths. Attempts to commit murder are classified as aggravated assaults.

Larceny - The unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Motor Vehicle Theft - Motor vehicle theft is defined as the theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle, including joy riding. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Motor Vehicle - A motor vehicle is defined as a self-propelled vehicle that runs on land and not on rails. Examples of motor vehicles are automobiles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, snowmobiles, golf carts, etc. Theft of farm equipment, bulldozers, airplanes, boats, and construction equipment are not included. Robbery - Robbery is defined as the taking or attempting to take anything of value under confrontational circumstances from the control, custody or care of another person by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear of immediate harm. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).

Hate Crimes - A criminal offense committed against a person or property which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, ethnicity/national origin, or sexual orientation. (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Definition).
