Message from the CBI Director

Each year when Crime in Colorado is published, the information is eagerly awaited by those seeking to improve the quality of life in our state, and by others with an interest in Colorado.  I encourage all that read this report to become as informed as possible regarding crime statistics when attempting to quantify the extent of crime in Colorado.

As you review this report, please keep in mind crime statistics can be interpreted differently by everyone and there are many factors which effect the information reported by law enforcement agencies.  While the CBI is committed to obtaining complete statistics from every law enforcement agency, several agencies were unable to provide all twelve months of data for 1998.  However, we at the CBI believe the reported data still represents a comprehensive view of crime in Colorado.  It is important to remember, the centerpiece for crime prevention relies upon the working partnership between the criminal justice community of police, prosecutors, and courts, as well as Colorado's elected officials and citizens.

I personally want to thank all of the law enforcement agencies which make this publication possible and add a special word of appreciation to the staff of CBI who spend many hours preparing the publication.  If you have questions regarding this publication please call the CBI at 303 239-4222.
